The Throat Microphone

Before flying out to Malaya to join No. 194 Squadron, Flt Lt Jim Reilly purchased a second hand WW2 throat microphone. He would be flying the Sycamore helicopter, providing aerial support of the ground forces involved in the Malayan Emergency. Why did he need a throat microphone and how does one work?
